Background

Home town: Larkspur, Colorado
Parents: Marcus Marshall and Antonia Terence Marshall

Marcus is principal of the Larkspur junior high school and Antonia is chief surgical nurse of the small hospital in the town.

Siblings: Teresa, Adrianna and Derek

Teresa is 31, married with three children, and a loving husband. She works out of her office as an investment consultant and real estate agent. She is on the fast track and headed for the top. Her husband is a rising executive in a multi-national industrial conglomerate. He understands that she is sacrificing much to stay at home with the children while he builds his career. They are very happy together.

Adrianna is 29, not married but in a long term close relationship with another associate professor at the small college where she is an instructor in the fine arts. For the last two years her partner has been pestering her about making a committment. But she is putting him off. Part of her fears being tied down, although Randy is the best thing that ever happened in her life. She has a driving ambition one day to be the head of an English studies department in a major university and doesn't want anything to obstruct that dream.

Derek is 17, living at home only in the sense that his parents have not yet tossed him out. Incredibly intelligent Derek has not yet found a challenge for himself in the stifling environment of the small mountain community of Coffin corners. He has not had any serious brushes with the law because of his respect for his brother Edwin. But he has started to hang out with the 'wrong crowd'.

Edwin loves his little brother dearly but thinks the kid is from Venus at times. He knows that Derek is smarter than he is but does not let that get between them.

Derek was the baby of the family, with all the spoiling that went with the birth order. Bright, and with a quick mouth, he would have gotten into a lot of trouble with the other boys at school but his older brother Edwin was always there to stand by him.

Went to a Catholic high school where he studied under a really wonderful history teacher named Sister Livia.

Preschool Life: A very active child who was getting into everything. Not a discipline problem in the sense that Edwin was bad. It was merely that he was a bundle of energy.

Grade School Life: Not the happiest. Edwin loved being outdoors and taking things apart too much to really take to formal schooling well. He was a brash child, not one to take an insult. He was in many fights until he grew too strong to casually challenge. When that happened Edwin almost became a bully. But his father, and the local priest, who Edwin respected deeply turned him away from that path. With their encouragement, and by letting him play school sports as a reward, they got him through grade school with good grades.

High School Life: Edwin discovered girls and fast cars in high school. This caused his grades to plummet to just above passing. But he did nothing to disgrace his family while seeing many young ladies, and he learned much about being a mechanic from his industrial education classes, plus working on the cars of his friends. Edwin found some good friends. He continued to be active in the youth programs of his church and was a member of the 'Junior friends of the Police' in his small town. By the time he was nearing graduation Edwin was regarded as 'a fine young man' by the working class parents of the young women he had been dating. One or two young women even hinted at marriage. Feeling himself not ready to settle down he discussed the matter with his father. Marcus, himself a marine vet, counselled an enlistment in the Corps. He felt that it would give Edwin additional mechanical skills, which would put him in a good position for a job. And, the elder Marshall felt, that a term of enlistment would look good if Edwin wanted to join the police force.

Central

Edwin enlisted in the Corps under their deferred enlistment program in the last term of his senior year of high school. He spent the last summer having fun. During that time he was also under the supervision of the local recruiting sergeant who made sure that Edwin would be ready physically and mentally for the rigors of recruit training.

Edwin, with his background in sports and firm self discipline did well in the Corps. By the end of his five year hitch he had made sergeant(e-5) and was a tank commander in a Marine armored unit. At the end of his term Edwin came home. He had learned his real ambition was to be a police officer from self-reflection and by association with the commander of the shore-patrol unit as his final posting.

Edwin returned home, entered the local police academy and passed through with good marks. Lately he has been relaxing into his work. The thought of possibly looking for a woman to marry has come into his mind.

Edwin is not tall, but his heavy musculature gives others the impression of greater size. He loves sports of all kinds, except those where a great deal of running is necessary. He is not all that fast, and doesn't corner well. But he is fairly agile for a man of his size.

Edwin loves a good meal, but does not drink intoxicating beverages at all. His friend, the priest, made it clear that such things were not necessary for an upright man. And Antonio considers himself an upright man. He maintains a quiet code of positive behavior; one he hopes will reflect well on him, his parents, and the community. At times Edwin can get a little forward in his dealings with others. He really wants his friends to have a connection to the divine and to be good folks. Sometimes his friends have to tell him to put that talk in a sock. Edwin doesn't mind. He is loyal to friends, but has nothing to do with those who lie to him or betray his trust. He loves the company of women, mixing easily with them because of growing up with older sisters.

Lovelife: Edwin dated around in high school like all the other young men. His only brush with a serious relationship came in the summer between his junior and senior year when he apprenticed as a junior mechanic for Mike Manzarro. Mike's daughter Martia developed a crush on Edwin. It could have grown into something serious but she took an opportunity to study in Europe for her junior year and they grew apart. Martia married someone else when she was nineteen. She and Edwin still are good friends.

Life goals: To be the best damn police officer in Larkspur and keep the streets as safe as they had been when he was growing up.

Recent events: Of course Edwin was very disturbed by the dreams of the young woman which sent him driving up to Vancouver. But something told him that it was very important. Being a good catholic Edwin has a suspicion that God is sending him on a mission.
